Nelson is known for its year-round sun, golden beaches, three national parks, 350 working artists, boutique wineries and the city for its historical streetscapes, waterfront cafes, fresh seafood, and a thoroughly relaxed lifestyle.

Nelson, named after Admiral Lord Nelson of Battle of Trafalgar fame, is the main commercial centre for the region, whose main industries are forestry, horticulture, fishing and tourism. Nelson’s artists include carvers, glassblowers, painters, potters and weavers, whose work can be seen by following any of the 13 craft trails that also takes in Nelson’s most attractive rural settlements.

Within the sheltering confines of Tasman Bay, Nelson’s beaches are safe, with silvery sand. Tahunanui Beach, within the city boundaries is a popular spot with great swimming and sunbathing only a short drive from your accommodation.

Only the West Coast has as many national parks as Nelson. Abel Tasman, New Zealand’s smallest, is a coastal wonderland of sea, sky, rocky headlands and bright golden beaches. The Nelson Lakes National Park is set amidst the mountains and glaciated valleys of south Nelson, and features beech forests and the beautiful jewel-like lakes, Rotoiti and Rotoroa. DAY 10 in Akaroa

Akaroa Harbour and Village on Banks Peninsula is an unexpected and truly magical taste of provincial France. In 1840 the race was on – the French were determined to raise the Tricoleur and claim Nouvelle Zelande as a colony of France. However, the English beat them by the narrowest of margins – only 5 days. Even so, once those first French settlers saw this beautiful area and all it had to offer, they stayed – and set about creating their own piece of France. Today, with its unique blend of historic architecture and beautiful harbourside location, Akaroa retains its Gallic charm.

Following lunch, it’s time for a cruise of Akaroa Harbour during which you’ll have the opportunity to view many seabirds and the very cute little New Zealand native; the Hector’s Dolphin.

This glacial fed turquoise blue lake is a hive of activity for everything outdoors! Following a lunch stop including time to take in the scenery in Tekapo, it’s back on the road as you continue on to Lake Pukaki with views never ceasing to take your breath away – mountainous scenery mirrored by crystal clear lake water reflects the first glimpses of the grandeur of Aoraki Mount Cook. You will love every moment of this road trip as you head south and witness the scenery change dramatically from colourful roadside wildflowers to the smooth tussock-covered saddle of the Lindis Pass – scenery as perfect as a landscape painting.

Follow the mighty Clutha – the South Island’s longest river – which leads you to the gorgeous holiday destination of Lake Wanaka. From Wanaka, you’ll continue on past Cromwell, through the spectacular Kawarau Gorge and onward to your stunning rural home for the next two nights.
